10,000 Hours – you’re an expert at your job, but not at interviewing

Once you’ve got 10,000 hours in doing something you are considered an expert according to Malcom Gladwell. During that time you may forget WHY you do something because it becomes second nature.
The fact that you’re an expert in your field, be it cooking, management, sales, technology, whatever your jam is, doesn’t mean that you’re an expert at interviewing for your dream job. Review the points below before your next interview. I promise it will pay off.
1. Develop a Clear Career Objective: Before hunting for jobs, take some time to contemplate and define what job you are looking for, where you want to work, and what kind of work environment suits you best. This clarity of vision will help you streamline your job search and highlight the right opportunities that will help you achieve your career goals.
2. Network and Connect: The importance of networking cannot be overemphasized in the job search process. Reach out to your professional connections and industry peers to learn about job openings, gain industry insights, and seek advice from them. Use LinkedIn or other social media platforms to expand your professional network beyond your current connections.
3. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter: A resume and cover letter are usually the first impression an employer will have of you. Make sure that both documents highlight your relevant skills, experience, and achievements. Customize it for the job you are applying for; to demonstrate how your skills align with the job requirements.
4. Prepare for Every Interview: Never underestimate the impact of preparation on your interview performance. Get an understanding of the company culture, research the job responsibilities, prepare your responses to common interview questions, and practice your interview skills. Give yourself the best chance to make a great first impression.
5. Keep a Positive Attitude: Job searching for a prolonged period can often lead to frustration and hopelessness. But maintaining a positive attitude throughout the job search process is essential. Reviewing and revising your job search strategy while keeping a positive attitude will help you find that dream job.
Remember, landing your dream job takes commitment, hard work, and patience. With the right strategies in place, you will be well on your way to achieving your career goals.
